Bandung - Russia joins the World Zakat Forum, a forum for practitioners, academics and observers of zakat management in the world. This year they (Russia) officially joined. The Secretary General of the World Zakat Forum Prof. Bambang Sudibyo opened the annual meeting and international conference of the Zakat Forum 2019 in the city of Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday.

He explained that Russia's population is around 80 million to 90 million and 10 percent are Muslim. The population in Russia enjoys freedom of religion. Therefore the zakat potential in Russia is large, he said. According to Bambang, Russia also has a zakat management agency and is eager to join the World Zakat Forum. Like Cambodia, where the Muslim population is only five percent, it turns out that the government gives great attention to these Muslim minorities, until there is a special minister of Islamic affairs, he said.

He added, Cambodia also expressed an interest: to join the World Zakat Forum, which is also a place to share experiences in managing and developing the role and function of zakat.

The World Zakat Forum, which was formed on 30 September 2010, now has 33 members including Indonesia, Malaysia, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, Bahrain, Jordan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Australia, United States, Bangladesh, Benin, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brunei Darussalam, and Ghana. India, Britain, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Maldives, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leon, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Togo, Uganda and Vietnam are also listed as members of the zakat forum besides organizations such as; IDB, UNICEF, D-8, UNDP, and Bank Indonesia.
